MacLean, Hoeller Named Fall Scholar-Athletes


AMHERST, Mass.

University of Massachusetts Athletics has named Heather MacLean and Fabian Hoeller its 2016 Fall Scholar-Athletes, it was announced on Wednesday.

MacLean, a redshirt junior from Peabody, Massachusetts, was the 2016 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Champion and was named Most Outstanding Performer of the meet while earning her second career Atlantic 10 All-Conference accolade.


She collected her second A-10 Academic All-Conference award for cross country this fall and third overall. MacLean opened the 2016 cross country season by winning the Spider Alumni Open and was named the USTFCCA Division I Female National Athlete of the Week and A-10 Performer of the Week following that performance.

Hoeller, a senior from Roesrath, Germany, is two-time academic all-conference honoree and two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. At center, he started all 12 games in 2016 and started 39 career contests with the offensive line. He blocked for the UMass offense that averaged 23.3 points, 99.5 rushing yards and 256.7 passing yards per game in 2016. With Hoeller up front, UMass scored 27 passing TDs and 10 rushing TDs.
